When the extended family in France asked me to take a picture of the mother and father so they could show the kids, I was really taken aback. I initially felt this was a horrible thing to do, after all who wants a picture of a dead body? Especially when they have encountered a fairly violent and disfiguring end. I was quite uncomfortable but the more I thought about it, the more I realised it was actually quite an opportunity. I had dealt before with a cot death and been happy to help arrange a tasteful photograph and have hand and foot prints in plaster for the family to keep, so why should it be any different after all, from them going to the morgue to see them?

Well, it shouldn’t, but it gave me a chance to help a family a bit more than I normally could. I asked around but no FLO seemed to have ever done anything like this before. So by the time I was on the way to pick up the brother, we had already discussed in my very limited French that he should bring the kid’s favourite two teddy bears. We stopped off at a florist in Baytown and I tried to buy some flowers. I say tried to, because I couldn’t persuade the shopkeeper to take any money. She’d been through this too; she knew exactly who I was and what I was doing it for and she just wouldn’t take the money. Human kindness when it’s not expected makes me feel really humble sometimes, and I could see her eyes getting teary as she tried to speak a little French to the kid’s uncle. We gratefully took the flowers and left. This might sound bizarre but the police would happily put me on a discipline charge for that if they had ever known. Even though I tried to pay her, taking something for nothing is a huge ‘don’t do’ and they make no exceptions. Complaints and discipline are inflexible and generally sheltered in offices from the real world.
